Preschool Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is geared toward providing each child with developmental programs that are age appropriate. The following is a brief overview of the curriculum, which is the building block for providing skills that are essential to the child in adulthood.
Language: To foster the language development necessary for literacy, our program is rich in language activities and resources that are vital to the lives of children and that provide opportunities for thinking, problem solving, and emergent reading. Our program is phonetic based and progresses from letter sound recognition which then leads to phonetic readers.
French will also be integrated in the program through songs and finger plays.
Mathematics: Students will be introduced to Number Sense and Numeration (recognizing, identifying, and writing numerals), Measurement (using simple terms, sequencing), Spatial Sense and Geometry (identifying and sorting shapes) and Patterning. Various exercises and materials will be explored to reinforce number recognition and enhance fine motor skills (e.g., sand paper numbers).
Science and Technology: As part of our science curriculum, the students will be able to explore and experiment with different concepts using a hands-on approach, and become familiar with use of technology, and the world around them. Topics of study will include Seasons, Weather, Patterns and Life Cycles, as well as, take part in a group science project.
Social Studies: By the end of Preschool, students will have a greater understanding of their surroundings, the environment and their uses. The Continents of the World will be explored and they will become familiar with social relationships, self-awareness, as well as health and safety concepts.
The Arts: The students will be given the opportunity to express ideas and feelings through a variety of media. Creative activities include: painting, drawing, crafts, drama, creative movement, and music. Students will also partake in fieldtrips, and welcome special guest speakers.
